Judge Jerry Smith is interviewing and has hired at least one (Georgetown).
Any details on Smith? I thought he had been in New Orleans and so assumed nothing was moving on the clerkship front. Someone updated the FLCIS entry on July 16 saying he'd hired one, but nothing since then.
A great way to locate past clerks is the following google search: "The Honorable XYZ" and "law clerk". This search will produce at least 50% - 60% of the Judge's past law clerks (depending on length of time on the bench) - just enough to give you an idea of his/her hiring tendencies
E Jones has definitely arranged phone interviews for the 19th. Not sure if she's scheduled any in-person interviews, but I believe she hired her first two phone interviews last year on the (audio) spot.
I was under the impression that Southwick would not make any more offers to 08-09 clerks until next week. Are the three that you are speaking of clerks to start immediately or clerks for 08-09?
So he is definitely through interview though, right? I believe he leaves for New Orleans tomorrow and it was my understanding that we'd know before then.
Judge Elrod is very deliberate in the manner in which she approaches things. I would expect her hiring practices to correspond to her approach to judicial adjudication. Hence, I expect she will wait until she has completed all her scheduled interviews, carefully consider each candidate once again, and make her final decisions. If my assumptions are correct, Elrod has not made any offers and will not until sometime late next week.
12/14 - What makes a "perfect" resume? Harvard and Yale? Or might there be other accomplishments that might make someone a good clerk such as great writing abilities and work experience?
I haven't heard either way. If I understood her correctly she's waiting until Thursday or Friday. Frankly, I was surprised to learn she already hired one. As the poet said, "The waiting is the hardest part"; or is it "One day more." I'll stop now.
No calls or e-mails from Judge Elrod today. She had told me to expect an answer in the second week in December, after she had interviewed 11-12 applicants.
Despite having absolutely no authority for this proposition, I'll say that Judge Elrod will make her hiring calls on Friday the 28th. Might as well start talking like it's going to happen soon, so that perhaps it will. I hear Vegas is going to start a betting line on this soon
Applicant's Log. Circuit Date: 011108. We still await word from Judge Elrod. No calls. No e-mails. No letters. Many have lost record of their interview dates, being so long ago. Some have said an asnwer is coming "soon," but we know not what that means any more. Some say that ours is an epic wait; others say its unprecedented. Without recourse, our wait continues. Maybe today will be the day. Maybe, but probably not.
Just for useless knowledge, I have heard that Judge Boudin (1st Cir.) holds the all-time record for time between interviews and offers: 4 months back in the early 90s. By that comparison, Judge Elrod still has a long way to go.
Clarification: the announcement of the acceptance just went out to the Chicago listserv. That doesn't necessarily mean the acceptance occurred today (although it is likely).
Actually, my understanding was that she was only hiring three new clerks total for 2008-09. Does that mean she has a career or two-year clerk or something as her fourth?
The Chicago clerkship e-mail list said that Elrod hired an alum (not a 3L as reported here). They have made mistakes in the past though, so I'll update if new information comes out.
I believe the Chicago 3L is the one referred to in the 3/6/08 9:57 posting, and that person is for 2009, not 2008. For 2008-09, then, I think Judge Elrod has hired: 1. A Harvard 3L 2. A Chicago alum 3. An American alum ('07) Does that mean there's still one slot open?
After three and a half long months of waiting, Judge Elrod is done hiring. Rejection letters have already begun to arrive. She has has one permanent clerk and thus hired only three term clerks.

Any details on Smith? I thought he had been in New Orleans and so assumed nothing was moving on the clerkship front. Someone updated the FLCIS entry on July 16 saying he'd hired one, but nothing since then.
I've heard from a current Smith clerk that the announcement in 2:14 that Smith is done is false.
Garwood sent an email saying he is reviewing grads' applications but won't set up interviews until 3Ls start applying.
Sorry! I guess my information was bad; sorry for the confusion. - 2:14
Jerry Smith hired two Chicago students today. His FLCIS profile shows that he now has one spot remaining.
Stewart has hired one. An alum.
I placed a call to Judge Benevides's chambers this morning. He's done. He hired grads.
Does anyone have any information on Judge Clement?
I think Judge Clement is interviewing grads.
Any word on P. Owen?
Does anyone know of an online site that shows past clerks for a judge?
If you can find past editions of the leadership directory, they're listed there.
A great way to locate past clerks is the following google search: "The Honorable XYZ" and "law clerk". This search will produce at least 50% - 60% of the Judge's past law clerks (depending on length of time on the bench) - just enough to give you an idea of his/her hiring tendencies
clement has hired one
I hear that she has hired two.

Higginbotham hired a clerk from Texas Law
Actually Clement is only hiring one 3L. She's already hired the other 3 clerks.
Anyone heard from EJones or Owen?
what about carl stewart?
Jolly has his interviews and should be done by the end of the week.
Judge Jolly has interviews scheduled for next week. He will not be done hiring by the end of this week.
E Jones has definitely arranged phone interviews for the 19th. Not sure if she's scheduled any in-person interviews, but I believe she hired her first two phone interviews last year on the (audio) spot.
Any recent info on Garza or Prado?
Judge Garza has called and scheduled interviews for next week.
any interview/hiring updates on stewart?
demoss is interviewing for one spot
Prado has called for interviews next week.
Barksdale called today for interviews next week.

Judge Jolly hired a 3L from Duke
Barksdale's done. He just took a Princeton / Marine Corps / Notre Dame 3L.

Is Jones done?

The following judges hired 3Ls from Texas Law:
Garwood (2 students)

Stewart called a friend of mine (3L).
Jolly's done -- just sent emails out.
dennis is done.
Smith is done, hired his fourth, from Columbia.

Garza is done. Hired NYU Grad, Duke 3L, and Texas 3L.
Prado hired a WashU 3L.
Is Prado done then?
is stewart done?
Elrod, anyone?
Anyone know anything about Southwick if he gets confirmed?
Anyone have any news on Judge Elrod?
Elrod hired a 2006 Texas Law graduate for this current term 2007-2008
Any word on what Southwick's hiring plans might be?
What's going on with Southwick? Anyone know if he's reviewing applications yet?
send apps for Judge Southwick to Judge Barksdale's chambers (http://www.olemiss.edu/depts/law_school/
career_services/bb.html)
Southwick has scheduled at least one interview for an 08-09 clerkship.
Judge Southwick set up an interview with for a 2008-2009 clerkship for this Friday.
he has made one hire for 08-09
Any word on when Judge Elrod will start interviewing for 2008, or if she already has?
Where did Southwick hire from? How many spots are left?
I hear Elrod is still not done hiring clerks to start immediately and is not in any hurry to begin interviewing 08-09 clerks.
I believe Southwick has three spots available after hiring one from Mississippi College.
Judge Southwick has recently scheduled several interviews for 08-09 clerk positions.
Any idea how many people he's interviewing?
Has anyone heard anything more on Elrod's hiring plans?
Judge Elrod has begun scheduling interviews for 08-09 clerks.
Anyone know how many people Southwick is interviewing or when he's interviewing until?
I heard Southwick will finish interviewing next week. Don't know how many.
Southwick has hired three clerks…two from Mississippi College…not sure about the third.
When did he start calling?
Does Southwick have any spots left?
I was under the impression that Southwick would not make any more offers to 08-09 clerks until next week. Are the three that you are speaking of clerks to start immediately or clerks for 08-09?
Elrod interviewing now
Only one Miss. College offer has gone out from Southwick for '08-'09.
When is Judge Southwick supposed to make his hiring decisions?
Anyone hear from Southwick today?
Any Southwick news?
I haven't heard a thing either. I don't think he's contacted anyone, since he told me he'd call everyone either way.
Same. I heard Southwick had one interview left at the end of last week, but no other news...
So he is definitely through interview though, right? I believe he leaves for New Orleans tomorrow and it was my understanding that we'd know before then.
Has anyone heard from Elrod?
Anyone know if Southwick still plans to call before he leaves for New Orleans?
Still waiting to hear anything re: Southwick. Don't know anything more.
Judge Elrod said that she will decide and inform next week ("second week in December").
Southwick is making offers.
Is Southwick doing exploding offers? Hires?
Any idea how many spots he has left? Will he make all his offers today? Is he planning to call everyone today?
Seconded. More Southwick offer information please...
He/She must've meant offers from Southwick for the '07-'08 term. (at least that's what I'll tell myself).
I hope that too, but the rumor I've heard is that he hired a Texas Law 3L for 2008-2009.
So you haven't heard anything either? That may be a sign that there are spots still left.
That's more than I know about Southwick's hiring. I'd imagine someone would make all the calls at once, but I don't know.
Is that confirmed for a Texas3L?
Confirmed. Southwick hired a Texas 3L today for the 08-09 term.
Sounds like Southwick only called the that one person from Texas. Perhaps the rest of us will get calls tomorrow.
I hope you're right. Since this has turned into the Southwick vigil, where all did he interview from?
I know of two Texas, one Ole Miss, and one Virginia. Any other schools?
I heard he interviewed seven all together. I know there were three from Texas Law, and four from somewhere else.
I think Judge Southwick must read this blog and is delaying just to see the comments and reactions.
I think it would be neat if he did read this. It's like an on-going suspense novel and he's the main character.
Guess we'll see what happens tomorrow.
Speaking of which, anyone know where Elrod interviewed from?
Anybody wanna ballpark the odds that Southwick has offered the only two people that don't post here?
Perhaps, but I'm still holding out hope that he's going to make two more offers today.
I'm with you. Hope springs eternal.
Any updates on Southwick?
nein
I figure he drove back from New Orleans this afternoon, so hopefully he'll get the rest of his calls done tomorrow morning.
Guess we'll have to wait and see.
No rejection letter from Southwick in my mailbox yet.
Did someone say he'd call rejects as well as offers?
That's what I was told during my interview. Everyone would receive calls.
I hope he does do that. That's a much classier way of handling your affairs then just sending rejection letters to interviewees.
Got a rejection e-mail from Southwick. Didn't say if he'd extended all offers yet, so calls may still be coming today for some.
Good luck if you're still waiting!
I got a rejection e-mail too. Good luck to the rest of you. Enjoy Jackson next year.
Southwick made all his offers on Wednesday, but delayed sending out rejection emails until today.
Elrod interviewed one American '07
Any idea where Southwick ended up hiring from besides Texas and Mississippi College?
Does anyone know if Elrod has made any offers, or is she definitely waiting until next week?
Southwick hired one from Virginia.
Does Southwick have his fourth clerk for '08 yet? So far, I count one UVA, one UT, and one Mississippi College.
Any word on Elrod?
Southwick has finished hiring, but I don't know any others than the one you mentioned. I know he interviewed an Ole Mis Law student too.
No e-mails or calls from Judge Elrod today
Any news from Judge Elrod? Looks like the 12/8 poster may have been right.
Word on the street is that Judge Elrod will definitely be making her decisions by the end of next week.
Received no contact from Judge Elrod Wednesday
Any word on where Southwick's fourth hire was from?
No word from Judge Elrod today.
No calls or e-mails from Judge Elrod today.
Elrod hired a Harvard 3L.
Southwick hired someone from Mississippi College? That is gross!!!
I think that's admirable. Shows he's willing to look at people that may not have the perfect resume.
Plus he used to teach there so he probably knew the person.
Anyone else receive notice from Judge Elrod?
I count only one hire (the Harvard 3L above) out of at least three spots.
12/14 - What makes a "perfect" resume? Harvard and Yale? Or might there be other accomplishments that might make someone a good clerk such as great writing abilities and work experience?
Any notice from Judge Elrod today?
I haven't heard either way. If I understood her correctly she's waiting until Thursday or Friday. Frankly, I was surprised to learn she already hired one. As the poet said, "The waiting is the hardest part"; or is it "One day more." I'll stop now.
Same here on three fronts: Haven't heard either way, surprised to hear about the first hire, waiting sucks
Nothing from Judge Elrod Wednesday. Anyone else?
Nada from Judge Elrod.
Another day without contact from Judge Elrod.
Anyone hear anything about Judge Elrod?
No calls or e-mails from Judge Elrod today. She had told me to expect an answer in the second week in December, after she had interviewed 11-12 applicants.
Anyone else get anything?
Nothing from Judge Elrod. I'm surprised.
Despite having absolutely no authority for this proposition, I'll say that Judge Elrod will make her hiring calls on Friday the 28th. Might as well start talking like it's going to happen soon, so that perhaps it will. I hear Vegas is going to start a betting line on this soon
Judge Elrod wouldn't want to ruin anyone's holiday. She'll probably wait until after New Year's Day to make calls.
Did someone on Dec. 14 seriously say that it is "gross" that Southwick would hire someone from MC. What an elitist thing to say. Truly ridiculous
And so the wait resumes, after a brief holiday break.
No calls or e-mail from Judge Elrod today.
No contact from Judge Elrod on Thursday. Anyone hear anything on this front?
Holidays are over. I'd guess the decisions are coming soon.
Nothing from Elrod yet.
"I'd guess the decisions are coming soon."
That all depends on your definition of "soon".
Nothing today from Elrod.
I enjoyed the Star Trek parody. On a practical note, I wonder if this means Judge Elrod is accepting applications again.
Just for useless knowledge, I have heard that Judge Boudin (1st Cir.) holds the all-time record for time between interviews and offers: 4 months back in the early 90s. By that comparison, Judge Elrod still has a long way to go.
You're right. That was useless. Thanks!
Nothing from Elrod yet.
FYI - Investiture is Friday
A Chicago alum accepted a clerkship with Elrod today.
Clarification: the announcement of the acceptance just went out to the Chicago listserv. That doesn't necessarily mean the acceptance occurred today (although it is likely).
12 applicants. Apparently 2 hires (HLS, Chicago). 2 spots left. Congratulations readers, you have a 20% chance of being selected.
Does anyone know if Elrod is still reading applications?
Actually, my understanding was that she was only hiring three new clerks total for 2008-09. Does that mean she has a career or two-year clerk or something as her fourth?
Any info on the last hire(s)?
Has Judge Elrod hired her third and/or fourth clerks? I count an HLS 3L and a Chicago alum.
I have heard nothing.
I haven't heard anything or gotten any emails or letters.
FYI, Southwick's fourth high was to a current D.C. clerk.
Wow, hard to compete with that.
D.C. as in district court, not D.C. Cir.
Ah, good clarification. Still impressive though. Any idea where he went to law school?
SHE went to Arkansas
Judge Elrod hired an American '07
Elrod hired a Chicago 3L for 2009
So is Elrod done?
The Chicago clerkship e-mail list said that Elrod hired an alum (not a 3L as reported here). They have made mistakes in the past though, so I'll update if new information comes out.
I believe the Chicago 3L is the one referred to in the 3/6/08 9:57 posting, and that person is for 2009, not 2008.
For 2008-09, then, I think Judge Elrod has hired:
1. A Harvard 3L
2. A Chicago alum
3. An American alum ('07)
Does that mean there's still one slot open?
The above post is correct regarding the Chicago 3L being hired for 2009.
After three and a half long months of waiting, Judge Elrod is done hiring. Rejection letters have already begun to arrive. She has has one permanent clerk and thus hired only three term clerks.
Anyone hear if that Chicago hire was the only one she made for 2009?
March 7, 2008 6:39 PM is correct that the American hire is for the 08-09 term (not 09-10)
Haynes, anyone?
As of yesterday, it's official.
