Judge Sentelle's early hires are law school graduates. He is adhering to the FLCHP with regards to current law school applicants and will not accept early applications from 3Ls.
Judge Tatel has already filled two slots for the 08-09 term with recent graduates. He follows the hiring plan for 3Ls. On the scheduled interview date this year he will fill the two remaining slots and will also interview applicants for the 09-10 term who are interested in clerking for a district court next year.
To September 9, 2007 11:11 PM: Judge Tatel has not yet hired anyone for 09-10. An NYU grad was hired earlier this summer for 08-09. Please see the comment from August 9, 2007 12:54 PM for details.
I don't know the answer to the question whether Randolph gives exploding offers, but I'm not sure it should matter. I understand ranking judges in terms of desirability. Some say don't do it, but I think it makes sense. But Randolph? What would you do if he gave you an offer that is not exploding? Would you say, oh gee, thanks judge, but could I have a couple of days (or even hours) to "think" about it? No! You take it. If you're in a position to get an offer from Randolph (or anyone on the D.C. Circuit, you take it right away, period.
Oh that's not what I was saying at all. I guess my question was more along the lines of whether he usually hires the first few people he interviews on the spot. As in, if you have a somewhat later interview, do you still have a chance?
10:42 is being pretty silly. There are some people who end up with tons of DC interviews, and who have clear preferences among the judges that are interviewing them. I know several people who in past years had multiple DC Circuit offers and waited on one or two them to interview with others. It's true that few people end up in this position, but I don't see why the people that are in this position should feel obligated to take an offer from a judge that isn't their first choice if they think there's a chance a higher-ranked judge will make them an offer.
I mean "higher-ranked" in the person's preferences. There are clear differences between judges in the quality of their mentorship, how kind they are to clerks, and things like that. If you think there aren't, you haven't talked to enough former clerks.
Point taken 9:22, I mistakenly assumed you were one of those posters who liked to argue the "prestige" of certain judges and had yourself creted a ranking system.
these slots fill up quickly. of the four democratic appointees, i believe there were only 6 total clerkship slots left for 3Ls. Edwards is done, Rogers has hired 3 of 4, Tatel has hired 2 of 4, Garland has hired 1 of 4. Most of the other judges have hired some alumni. I think Sentelle has only 1 slot.
also, garland has deployed the unique tactic of stacking all his top interviewees at the 7:00 AM start time, so if you're not interviewing with garland at 7:00, you are probably not clerking for him.

My bad. I completely misunderstood where you were going with that question.
I didn't phrase it too clearly. I hear that is often the case on the DC Circuit, though. Any idea if this is true?
Any chance anyone is still making calls?
