Per FLCIS, Mihm finished hiring in May. Anyone know what happened there? Did a current clerk decide to stay on for a second year or did he really hire that early?

Anonymous said...

Are any ND ILL judges interviewing, or are they holding out until September? What about those who have hired early in the past, e.g., Filip, St. Eve, etc.?

Anonymous said...

Kendall and Lindberg have openings for this fall (2007) but are only looking for clerks with prior legal or clerkship experience.

Anonymous said...

I've heard a rumor that, unexpectedly, Kendall will have an opening this fall (based on the preceding post, others have heard this as well). Yet, she has not made any official vacancy announcement (via ND Ill's website or the Fed Clerkship Database). Is she doing a quiet search based on referrals, or is she going to have an open call at some point (as Judge Kennelly did last month)? Any inside info? How does one apply, "Dear Judge Kendall: I would like to be considered for the rumored clerkship vacancy in your chambers . . . "??? (yes, this is a sarcastic suggestion)

Anonymous said...

Kendall's current clerk will be leaving at some point this fall that is not yet determined. She is therefore conducting a more informal search based mainly on referrals. I would write a cover letter saying "I am writing to apply for a clerkship in your chambers. I am available to start as soon as October of this year."

Does anyone know if Lindberg is in the same boat as Kendall for his fall 2007 opening (no official announcement but conducting an informal search based on referrals)?

Anonymous said...

Not sure if he's going to make an announcement, but his search seems broader. He is very firm on the prior legal/clerkship experience qualification.

Anonymous said...

Filip has hired at least one alum clerk early for 08-09.

Anonymous said...

Is Filip done?

I assume the requirements of Kendall and Lindberg in reality will limit them to candidate working in law firms because current law clerks such as myself just can't up and quit our current clerkships...

Anonymous said...

current clerks can't up and leave their clerkships, but if their clerkships are ENDING, that would work out nicely.

Anonymous said...

Judge Kendall does have a law clerk leaving soon, but she currently has three clerks (with special permission from the court). When she loses a clerk in a few weeks, she'll just be down to two clerks--she won't be hiring someone new.

Anonymous said...

What about Lindberg? Does anyone know if he has posted an actual opening somewhere?

Anonymous said...

I'm curious about any information on the judge in the Southern and Central district. Do Reagan or Murphy have any openings? What about McCuskey or Scott? Also, does anyone know if McDade has taken senior status yet?

Anonymous said...

McCuskey has career clerks, and does not hire term clerks.

Anonymous said...

I literally called every judge in the N.D. Ill, S.D. Ill, and C.D. Ill, and what you see posted is truly what is available - no on Scott, no on everyone in C.D. ILL except McDade and he waits forever based on my experience with him last year (I had my state supreme court clerkship in hand in November before he even started calling). S.D. Ill - as far as I know only the post E St Louis is open. N.D. Ill is sparser than normal as well - though there are a few posted in ND ILL.

Has anyone heard from the ND judges today?

Anonymous said...

Any word on Judge Pallmeyer?

Anonymous said...

Pallmeyer has been contacting people.

Anonymous said...

Aspen is calling

Anonymous said...

Castillo is done. Kennelly, Filip, and Gettleman made calls today.

Anonymous said...

Kendall WILL be hiring someone new. Judges on ND Ill can either have 3 law clerks or 2 law clerks plus an admin assistant. For example, Filip hires 3 law clerks every year and has no admin assistant.

I am a current law clerk on ND Ill and my judge forwarded me an email from Kendall herself saying she will be hiring a new clerk when a current one leaves.

Anonymous said...

Anyone hear from Coar?

Anonymous said...

Any word on Moran or Shadur (ND Ill)?

Anonymous said...

Have any of the magistrate judges been calling?

Anonymous said...

Shadur is not hiring.

Anonymous said...

So is Shadur is hiring no one for '08 or has he already hired? He posted an opening on FLCIS.

Anonymous said...

Denlow has been scheduling interviews

Anonymous said...

Anyone heard from Zagel (ND Ill)?

Anonymous said...

" Anonymous said...

The clerk told me in person that he was not accepting applications. Maybe she didn't like the way I looked?

Anonymous said...

That could be it...

Anonymous said...

coar called yesterday

Anonymous said...

Holderman or Leinenweber (ND ILL)?

Anonymous said...

I think Shadur usually hires very late

Anonymous said...

Shadur has hired both clerks for the 08-09 term (both were already out of law school and could apply before the law student deadline).

Anonymous said...

Apparently Holderman isn't interviewing until October.

Anonymous said...

Leinenweber does not interview until March.

Anonymous said...

Judge Moran has not started issuing interview invitations yet.

Anonymous said...

"I have been receiving a number of calls from applicants who are going to be in town for interviews asking if the Judge would like to see them. Please be advised that Judge Leinenweber does not interview for his open positions unil March 2008. This has always been his interview policy. Please do not call chambers requesting an interview. IF you are selected for an interview in 2008, you will be contacted by Judge Leinenweber's chambers. Thank you."

Also, has anyone heard anything about St. Eve?

Anonymous said...

Any word from Zagel?

Anonymous said...

does anybody know if coar's clerkship is actually for 1 yr or for 2? oscar says 1, but i've heard rumors that he doesn't tell you it's a 2 yr clerkship until you get to the interview.

Anonymous said...

Any updates on Kendall and Lindberg's new clerk searches for 2007?

Anonymous said...

Regarding Coar: Someone told me that he has had two-year clerkships in the past, and is switching to one year. I can't imagine he'd post for one year and then surprise you at the interview. He seems far nicer and more reasonable than that.

Anonymous said...

Zagel is calling.

Anonymous said...

Any info on Aspen? When is he interviewing/making offers?

Anonymous said...

Aspen is interviewing this week.

Anonymous said...

Kennelly is done.

Anonymous said...

Aspen has hired one.

Anonymous said...

Any info on who Aspen hired?

Anonymous said...

any word on who kennelly hired?

Anonymous said...

Kennelly hired a Northwestern 3L.

Anonymous said...

aspen has rejected some, and not gotten back to some. Presumably he's waiting to hear back from his other offer

Anonymous said...

Any word on Herndon, McDade, or Holderman?

Anonymous said...

I heard Aspen hired one from Northwestern

Anonymous said...

Any word on whether Pallmeyer has made offers? I think her last interview was this morning...

Anonymous said...

Pallmeyer said she would be deciding "early this week," but I don't any more details than that. I don't think she's made her hires yet.

Anonymous said...

So Aspen is done?

Anonymous said...

According to OSCAR, Holderman is done.

Anonymous said...

pallmeyer said she had filled her spots

Anonymous said...

Per chambers, its confirmed that Holderman is done

Anonymous said...

5:22, do you mean Pallmeyer has made offers and had them accepted?

If so, has anyone received rejection calls/emails?

Anonymous said...

Pallmeyer rejected me and said that her spot was filled

Anonymous said...

I was told by Pallmeyer's chambers that she would be sending out rejection emails as soon as she had filled her spots. Did you receive an email, or did you call her chambers?

Anonymous said...

3:29, just to clarify. You interviewed with Pallmeyer and have been rejected?

Anonymous said...

Judge Filip is done hiring.

Anonymous said...

Per Pallmeyer's chambers at noon EST, she has not made her decisions, but applicants should hear from her "very soon" one way or the other.

Anonymous said...

Pallmeyer has hired, not sure from where but it was a male according to the snail-mail rejection. On a positive note, the rejection was at least personalized and hand signed!

Anonymous said...

Yes, Aspen is done. He only hired one- his other is a two year.

Anonymous said...

McDade has sent out "are you still interested" emails, not sure how wide this net is, but I thought I would post it since someone inquired as to his status.

Anonymous said...

Is Moran done?

Anonymous said...

that is so typical of McDade to wait this long - I had a clerkship last year before he even started, and I had a second clerkship this year a month before he started! does he not realize the good candidates have been snatched up by other federal judges by the end of September??? I actually would have given him some preference given I am from Peoria originally if he had timely called....

Anonymous said...

I would be careful saying things like "the good candidates are snatched up by the end of September" given that there are a lot of people reading this blog that do not yet have a clerkship.

Anonymous said...

well, it is beyond debate that the "best" candidates are snatched up first and the stragglers are left with the lesser candidates...even if still technically "good" candidates...

Anonymous said...

If you've ever met Judge McDade's clerks, you'd realize how ridiculous that statement is. Both are extraordinary people (and no I'm not one of them, but I do know them both).

And seriously, Judge McDade is a year or two from taking senior status and retiring - he's been on the bench for a long time. I doubt he cares if he's not getting Harvard's #1. He knows what he's doing, and as I've already mentioned, he finds clerks that are more than capable. Show a little respect.

Anonymous said...

And as a follow-up (I posted immediately above) - Judge McDade looks more for well-rounded, interesting people. He lived a pretty extraordinary life, and I think he genuinely enjoys the company of worldly kids who are interesting and work hard. He's not necessarily out for the top students - let's face it, most law students can be capable clerks.

I hope that sheds light onto why Judge McDade isn't gunning that first week in September.
If you're lucky enough to get a McDade interview, whoever you are, be sure to talk about interesting stuff in your life, and less about your accomplishments. Enjoy in a conversation with the Judge - he's a great guy.

Again, I am NOT a McDade clerk, nor have I been - but I did work with them.

Anonymous said...

Kind of a tough break for anyone who signed on with Judge Filip. Looks like you're out a job!

"Attorney General Mukasey has tapped Mark Filip, a federal judge in Chicago, to be his deputy attorney general. If confirmed, Filip will replace acting deputy AG Craig Morford, a career prosecutor who filled the post last summer after Gonzales’s No. 2 Paul McNulty resigned last summer. (Click here for a post on Morford; and here for a post on McNulty, who’s now at Baker & McKenzie.)"

From WSJ Law Blog

Anonymous said...

or, they have a new job at the DOJ!

Anonymous said...

To the poster who posted "Again, I am NOT a McDade clerk, nor have I been - but I did work with them."

You did not even stop to read the original poster's post. The OP already has secured a federal d.ct. clerkship, and the OP was only making the point that McDade once again has lost out to other federal judges by delaying.

His loss, but very McDade-like.

Anonymous said...

I stopped and read it, and stand by my point. The idea that all the best candidates are gone that first weekend is ridiculously elitist. Some judges don't give a rip if you graduated top of your class at Harvard or around the top 25% mark at a solid midwest law school. While clerking is a big deal, most any law student can do it and do it well - nowhere is this more true than in rural districts like C.D. Ill., where most of the litigation in front of a judge like McDade is the relatively basic 1983 or social security stuff.

Judge McDade just cares more about the quality of the clerk he is getting, not the education. He's done quite well. If I insinuated anything about the original poster other than the ridiculous elitist attitude, I apologize. My intent was to defend Judge McDade's current clerks, both of whom are extremely intelligent people from top 25 law schools, and who I'm confident will both go on to big things - and *shudder* they were even hired after the September wave (when all the "good candidates" go right?). I'm calling BS is all.

I clerk in a district in a major southern, and there's a good mix of clerks who are hired in the September wave and others hired later in the year. Looking at the quality of the work, you can't tell the difference at all. Clerking is a pretty damn easy job - it's not like it requires 30 years of experience to do it. Most any law student, whether hired in September or later, will do just fine.

Anonymous said...

Based on what I personally know of McDade's former clerks, it is the exact opposite - he tends to hire more on "demographic" characteristics than merit. He can wait until late and still accompish this goal. The senior partner of the law firm I work for in a major metro area in Illinois literally laughs at McDade - says if he is a federal judge, anyone can be a federal judge. The original poster is probably lucky he or she got hired by a reputable district judge in a non-flyover district and that McDade waited so long!

Anonymous said...

any word on newly appointed Dow in ND IL for the 08-09 term?

Anonymous said...

He took one current Mayer Brown associate, and one former as of now.

Anonymous said...

when does Lienenweber start calling for his March interviews?

Anonymous said...

Did McDade hire?
