I heard Charles Breyer has already hired his one term clerk (an alum), and OSCAR seems to confirm this (he lists the position as filled for 08-09).
Does anyone know if Judge Sabraw is adhering to the hiring plan for current students? Her FLCIS form says applications are accepted "Open until filled." I've called a bunch of judges who have the same thing listed, and they claim to be adhering to the hiring plan.
Henderson and White have permanent clerks. Conti is not interviewing anybody yet. Illston is maybe away on vacation (her calendar is voided out 'till after labor day and nobody picked up the phone). Schwarzer is interviewing grads, maybe selectively. FYI, he sits by designation (1st, 6th and 9th) almost entirely these days.
Just heard that Judge Andrew Guilford in the Central District of California (Santa Ana) is accepting applications on OSCAR, even though there have been reports to the contrary.
Collins has been interviewing alums for a while, and I doubt that she'll be calling any law students. She has posted on her FLCIS site: "Judge Collins will ONLY consider applicants that have obtained their Juris Doctor degree with a minimum of two years legal experience."
Morrow's husband passed away recently (http://blogs.wsj.com/law/2007/09/07/law-blog-obituary-california-judge-paul-boland/), so she may be behind in calling.
Feess seems to be saying that if you're going to have to travel to the Central District to interview with him, and you already have travel plans, let him know.
I have not heard from SDCA, but a comment on Nuts & Boalts reveals they got a call from Gonzales. (Boalt applicants don't seem to be participating in the Clerkship Notification Blog very much)
I spoke with Patel's, Whyte's and Jenkin's chambers midday on Tuesday, and none of those judges had even started calling (the receptionists uniformly seemed surprised at the suggestion that there might be some reason they would be). No word since. Anyone heard anything different?
While Judge Gutierrez (CDCA) has hired a clerk with several years experience as one of his first two clerks, it is not clear that he has a strong preference for clerks with work experience.
Jenkins has applied to the California Court of Appeal (it is not a rumor, there have been media reports about it). I've heard that, as a result, he will be holding off hiring for a while.
Jensen's chambers told me they were still reviewing apps on Friday. I think that secretaries and clerks are just told to give this response to everyone who inquires about clerkships.

Breyer is done. Alsup is calling
Is Alsup calling alums or current students? C'mon folks, include this information in your posts.
alums for certain; not sure about students.
claudia wilken is done hiring
August 13, 2007 5:28 PM:
Judge Dana Sabraw is male. This is information you might want to know (you know, in case you call chambers asking questions about "her" hiring plan).
;-)
Ha, good to know. I had thought "he" was a "she," too!
Besides Alsup, does anyone know if the other Bay Area district judges are currently interviewing alums?
Henderson and White have permanent clerks. Conti is not interviewing anybody yet. Illston is maybe away on vacation (her calendar is voided out 'till after labor day and nobody picked up the phone). ATL blog posted about Jenkins' intent to leave NDCal for a state appellate spot. Anyone know if he will still hire for 08-09?
Juddge Chesney also has permanent clerks.
Chesney advertised an opening on FLCIS.
Armstrong is now interviewing.
Schwarzer is done.
Just heard that Judge Andrew Guilford in the Central District of California (Santa Ana) is accepting applications on OSCAR, even though there have been reports to the contrary.
Matz in the C.D. is done.
Stotler is calling.
Any word on CA district judges?
Judge Selna has filled up his interview slots.
Judge King is scheduling interviews
Judge Cooper is scheduling interviews.
Stotler is calling.
C'mon.... surely more Cali judges are calling!
alsup is calling
Illston is calling.
Pregerson is calling.
Karlton is still calling.
Any word on San Diego judges?
Judge Armstrong is currently interviewing law school grads.
has anyone heard from otero?
Phillips called earlier today
Any word on Jenkins?
Does anyone know if Karlton made all his calls?
Snyder or Patel?
Any word on Fogel or Ware (San Jose)?
Where the heck are all the NDCA judges?
How about Shubb or Damrell (EDCA)? Jones (SDCA)?
Anyone heard from Collins, Feess or Morrow in CDCA?
Collins has been interviewing alums for a while, and I doubt that she'll be calling any law students. She has posted on her FLCIS site: "Judge Collins will ONLY consider applicants
that have obtained their Juris Doctor degree with a minimum of two years legal experience."
Morrow's husband passed away recently (http://blogs.wsj.com/law/2007/09/07/law-blog-obituary-california-judge-paul-boland/), so she may be behind in calling.
I heard from her chambers that Collins has hired already for 08-09.
Damrell's not hiring.
Jenkins: rumor that he has applied for state appellate position. Chambers said yesterday that he won't be calling for another 4-6 weeks.
Can someone please tell me what they have heard from Feess, and if they understand what it means?
Feess apparently just began reviewing apps.
Feess seems to be saying that if you're going to have to travel to the Central District to interview with him, and you already have travel plans, let him know.
Fogel made calls on Tuesday morning.
Snyder is calling
Burrell or Shubb?
Judge Jensen?
Walker? It looks like some of the judges in NDCA and elsewhere have jury trials scheduled for this week. Does that mean they'd be super busy?
Has anyone heard from the SDCA judges (Gonzalez, Huff, Jones, Sabraw)?
I have not heard from SDCA, but a comment on Nuts & Boalts reveals they got a call from Gonzales. (Boalt applicants don't seem to be participating in the Clerkship Notification Blog very much)
Has anyone heard from Wilson?
Miller will not be reviewing apps for awhile.
I imagine most NDCA judges (Walker, Whyte, Patel, Ware, etc.) are done, right?
Huff (SDCA) has called.
Burrell, Jones, and Conti are still in the process of reviewing applications.
Guilford has made calls.
Anyone have an interview with a San Diego judge?
Has anyone heard from V. Walker (NDCA)?
I spoke with Patel's, Whyte's and Jenkin's chambers midday on Tuesday, and none of those judges had even started calling (the receptionists uniformly seemed surprised at the suggestion that there might be some reason they would be). No word since. Anyone heard anything different?
Shubb has made calls.
Patel has called.
When did Patel call?
Hear from Walker earlier this week.
Whoops - heard from Walker.
Anyone heard from Carney?
Have Carter or Fairbank called?
anyone know about the recently confirmed judge in SD, Sammartino?
Carter has made his calls
O'Neill (EDCA) has career clerks. Benitez (SDCA) is not hiring.
Otero has made calls
Can y'all include when calls were made, if you know?
Has anyone heard from Gutierrez (CDCA)?
Any news from Chesney or Ware (NDCA)?
How do you contact judges' chambers in CD-CA? Do you call the court clerk listed on the court's website?
Gutierrez is finished scheduling interviews (per call to chambers).
Gutierrez has already filled one spot, and strongly perfers to fill the second with someone with a few years work experience out of law school.
Morrow is not hiring for this term.
Anyone heard from Real or Schiavelli?
Morrow is interviewing for next term, 11:34am is incorrect.
Has Judge Samuel Conti (NDCA) ever hired a female law clerk?
Carter has called all planned interviewees (called chambers).
Anyone heard from Jensen (NDCA)? Is he even hiring?
Schiavelli interviewed last Friday.
Any news from Baker Fairbank or Real (CDCA)?
Ware (NDCA) has hired at least one, per UChicago stats
CORRECTION: Ware has scheduled one Chicago interview (per Chicago's listserv)
While Judge Gutierrez (CDCA) has hired a clerk with several years experience as one of his first two clerks, it is not clear that he has a strong preference for clerks with work experience.
Judge Napoleon Jones in the S.D. called yesterday.
As far as my count, I have the following judges not having made calls -
NDCA: Conti, Chesney, Jensen
CDCA: Real, Fairbank
SDCA: Sabraw, Miller, Houston
EDCA: Burrell
Is that correct? Anyone hear from any of these judges?
i don't think whyte has called
Chesney (NDCA) has two career clerks and therefore is not hiring.
Where are you getting that info about Chesney from? According to FLCIS she is hiring for the '08-09 term.
What about Feess (CDCA) and Jenkins (NDCA)? Although I have heard the rumors about Jenkins leaving to take a state appellate court position.
Notwithstanding the FLCIS posting, I've been told by multiple sources that Chesney is not hiring, including current NDCA clerks.
Jenkins has applied to the California Court of Appeal (it is not a rumor, there have been media reports about it). I've heard that, as a result, he will be holding off hiring for a while.
Per call to chambers, Chesney is hiring (currently reviewing applications).
Wright (CDCA) is not hiring
Jensen has filled his one slot.
Can you tell me where Jensen's hire is from?
Jensen's chambers told me they were still reviewing apps on Friday. I think that secretaries and clerks are just told to give this response to everyone who inquires about clerkships.
J. Real called Friday.
Has Fogel hired?
Judge Napoleon Jones is interviewing all of this week.
Has Armstrong completed hiring (or at least extended offers)?
NDCA - Illston's done.
CDCA- Schiavelli and Snyder are done
J. Real called law student yesterday.
NDCA - Chief Judge Walker is done.
Jensen's hire is from Hastings.
I spoke with Schwarzer's chambers- applicants have already been selected
Also, Judge Whyte is not currently hiring, though he has kepy all applications on file.
Why is Whyte not hiring? He hired last year. Is he simply not hiring, or just holding off for awhile?
Wilson, Nelson, and Feess are all done.
What about Sabraw (SD)?
Doesn't Sabraw only hire asians?
Have Fogel and Jones made their decisions?
Fogel and Jones hired per phone call to Chambers.
Huff hired.
Is Huff done?
Yes, Huff is done. That's what's meant by saying she hired.
Anyone hear from Miller (SDCA), Conti (NDCA) or Chesney (NDCA)?
Stotler (CD CA) is still interviewing.
I got a rejection from Miller (SDCA) that said he already hired. Don't know if it's true or not.
11:02, do you mind sharing when you received this rejection? I thought Miller wasn't hiring for awhile.
Yesterday by mail. I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be telling the truth.
I got the Miller rejection letter too. A few weeks ago someone at his office assured me he would not be hiring until late October or November.
Has Conti hired?
Sabraw hired
Armstrong is done.
I got a rejection postcard from Sabraw, which had a very funny typo.
In the postcard, he called himself a "United Sates District Judge."
Any recent news from Judge Real (CDCA)?
Does anyone know an update on Judge Ware (NDCA)? An open position for the 08-09 season?
Anyone heard about Burrell's recent opening?
When will judges start interviewing law school grads (not bound by hiring plan) for 2009-10 term?
